This Week: Let’s Draw Characters with Emotions and Create Stories!

Picture book author and illustrator, Jennifer O’Connell, will tell us about herself and her process of developing stories. Then, she will lead us in a simple drawing exercise that will explore characters and their emotions that develop into our own stories. Bring along a few sheets of unlined paper, a pencil and your imagination! You’ll be inspired and have fun, too!

Jennifer O’Connell loves the challenge of combining words with illustrations to create a world within a picture book. Inspired and encouraged by her parents, Jennifer’s love of art began as soon as she could hold a crayon. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from The The University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Jennifer’s picture book, The Eye of the Whale – A Rescue Story received a Green Earth Book Award and a Moonbeam Gold Award, and was selected for Reading Is Fundamental’s STEAM Multicultural Booklist.

Jennifer created the New York Times Bestseller, Ten Timid Ghosts and is a two-time winner of the Christopher Award for earlier titles. She is the author of It’s Halloween Night!, Harvest Party! and is the illustrator of A Garden of Whales, among others. Jennifer is known for her engaging and interactive presentations and workshops for schools and groups in the DC, MD and VA area.
