Corporal Ronnie Crowe and Sergeant Javier Baquero spend a lot of time getting to know the folks at Main Street – so much so that they even have their own smoothies named after them at the Soulfull Cafe. Crowe and Baquero are two examples of community policing at its best – they listen to the needs of Main Street members and residents and their ongoing engagement helps to keep our community safe. They help lead resident meetings, host Coffee with a Cop, advise on safety issues and enjoy Main Street programs alongside members. Through these interactions, everyone walks away having learned something – maybe it’s a new way to communicate, or a tip for staying safe in your apartment. Maybe it’s a reminder that each individual is unique.
Lately Crowe and Baquero have been busy planning Neighborhood Safety Day, a new joint initiative with Main Street designed to bring together community members with public safety workers for education and fun. The planning committee also includes retired Montgomery County police officer and Main Street resident safety officer Joe Lowery and Main Street staff Julie, Tara, Faith, David and Leo. They’re pulling out all the stops: Monroe Place will be closed to make room for emergency vehicles, safety demonstrations, health resources, food trucks, a DJ, a raffle and a photo booth. Participants can engage in a mock traffic stop or go on a pedestrian safety walk. And you won’t want to miss the police dog demonstration!
